Requirements for CBAP Certification
The Certified Business Analysis Professional CBAP certification is a qualification that is awarded by the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) to people at the senior level who have extensive experience in business analysis. It is a highly sought-after qualification which recognizes both the value and expertise that individuals bring to the profession.
CBAP certification is for senior business analysts who have 5+ years of experience and are recognized experts in the BA field. Those with a CBAP qualification can be relied on for the most significant projects. They will demonstrate commitment to the profession and have an important edge with employers.
CBAP certification training allows you to master high levels of business analysis which include effective planning, advanced documentation, and the design of business solutions. In order to qualify for this certification, applicants must meet stringent criteria.
The following experience is necessary :
The first requirement is a minimum of 7500 hours of business analysis work experience. This is in line with what is recommended in the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK) Guide from the IIBA. This Guide was first published by the International Institute of Business Analysis as a draft document in October 2005, for consultation with the business analysis and project management community and to standardize accepted business analysis practices. Its first formal release was in 2006. Version 2.0 was released 31 March 2009 and Version 3 in April 2015.
The second requirement is a minimum of 900 hours experience across at least 4 of the 6 knowledge areas. These 6 knowledge areas are Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring, Elicitation and Collaboration, Requirements of Life Cycle Management, Strategy Analysis, Requirements of Analysis and Design Definition and Solution Evaluation.
To explain these categories further: Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring is all about the tasks used to coordinate and organize business analysis. Elicitation and Collaboration concerns the tasks used to prepare for and also to conduct elicitation activities and to confirm their results.
Requirements of Life Cycle Management is all about the tasks used to maintain and manage requirements and design information from the beginning to their end. Strategy Analysis concerns the tasks used to identify business needs and how to address those needs as well as to align the change strategy that exists within the enterprise. Requirements Analysis and Design Definition is concerned with the tasks used to organize requirements, the validation and verification of information, identifying solution options and estimating the potential value that could be realized. Solution Evaluation is all about the tasks used to assess the performance of and the value delivered by any particular solution and also about recommending improvements on increasing value.
The third requirement for your CBAP certification is a minimum of 21 hours of professional development received from an IIBA endorsed training provider.
To support your CBAP application, you will also require two references from the following categories: a career manager, a client or someone with a CBAP certificate.
